Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia

Dementia occurs when the brain is damaged by diseases or a series of strokes. Many conditions can cause dementia, the most common being Alzheimer’s.

Regardless of the cause, dementia can be frightening, making it challenging to find the right help and why the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia exists; to support all Nova Scotians living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in communities throughout the province.

In 2014, the generous support of The George W. Wilson & Teresa Madelyn (Merriam) Wilson Foundation created our first Regional Coordinator of Education and Outreach in the Cumberland-Colchester region of Nova Scotia. The Education and Outreach brought public awareness and educational sessions to the community, helping expand our vision for community outreach across the province.

And, the Wilson Foundation’s support built a solid case for provincial funding with the impact of this shown today through the six Regional Coordinators the Alzheimer’s Society has across Nova Scotia. The latter build partnerships, increase awareness of dementia and provide services that deliver much-needed education and support to people living with dementia, their families and health care workers.
