In 2005, Colchester Community Workshops was fortunate enough to move into a new building, named Rotary House, at 168 Arthur St., in the heart of downtown Truro, N.S. At the time of its opening, CCW was providing services to 58 adults with intellectual disabilities. It was a very exciting time as new opportunities were everywhere. More clients were quickly accepted into service, eliminating the wait list, programs were further expanded and many partnerships with local business and service groups developed.
Today, CCW supports 90 individuals in its diverse programs. Clients may participate in one or more of our vocational programs including Buttons and Ribbons (award ribbons and promotional buttons), the Intercolonial Café, New to You thrift store, contracts areas or janitorial/maintenance programs. A Transitions Program is offered on a part time evening basis to support those clients on the wait list, which once again faces the organization and a growing need for service is recognized. A Life Enhancement Program provides opportunities such as, attending community events, visits to museums, recreational pursuits and educational experiences. Many of the people supported at CCW do not have the resources necessary to access these types of activities otherwise. One other integral program currently offered at CCW is the Community Employment Program, which focuses on supporting clients to find paid employment in the community. Last year this program recognized significant growth, with 35 clients securing work for a real wage (mix of contract, seasonal, part time and full time employment). The staff and clients are very proud of all that is accomplished each day within this facility and consistently bring forwards new ideas.
